Saint Luke’s makes consent forms readable
Here’s one more reason I love Saint Luke’s Kansas City: The health system has introduced a new medical consent form that’s so simple, you don’t have to be a surgeon to read it.
Unlike standard consent forms, which often contain incomprehensible medical jargon and unrelated complications, the new form presents personalized information. It’s written at an eighth-grade reading level and illustrated with graphics.
Patients report that the targeted information and easy-to-understand language decreases their anxiety.
“Patients are much better able to grasp what’s going on,” said Carole Decker, R.N., Ph.D. “In fact, twice as many reported actually reading the new consent forms compared with the old versions.”
It’s even available in Spanish.
How can you make even your most complex information easier to understand?
